About SEACAT-Schmeding

Ship supplier since 1987

SEACAT-Schmeding has been a ship supplier since 1987, when it all started under the name DanSupply ApS in Svendborg, and we are now able to offer a wide range of products and services.

Svendborg has always been a maritime city – since at least the Middle Ages. In recent times and about until the end of the 1980s, approximately 250 coasters were registered in Svendborg, while around 200 coasters were registered in the island of Ærø.

With approximately 12 shipping companies in Svendborg and around 8 on Ærø, the entire South Funen area was teeming with ships in the 1980s and 1990s. Therefore, Svendborg has historically been a mecca for ship victualling, and this is exactly how SEACAT-Schmeding started out.

New requirements for handling medicine

Developing our online medicin database !

Originally, SEACAT was purely a victualler serving coasters from near and far when they docked in Svendborg and around about northern Europe. Since then, we have developed the business and today we supply anchor chains, anchors and ship medicine.

In the late 1990s, the EU introduced new requirements for the handling of medicines on ships. Back then, ship medicine was rarely given much focus, and many medical products had expired by the time they came to be used.

This prompted the idea of an online database for keeping track of medicine requirements, consumption and expiration dates, so that shipping companies and ship captains could avoid critical situations where missing or expired medicine might result in a lack of treatment. The database is called www.shipmedicalcare.com, and it has been continuously developed and improved in line with changing legal requirements and shipping company needs.

A growing demand for anchor chains

When Danish ships were allowed to buy medicines from abroad, we turned to a famous Dutch ship pharmacy, and we now represent them in Scandinavia and Germany. They currently serve a large proportion of the Danish fleet, and through our medical system, we make sure that the medicine chests meet the requirements of the ship’s flag state. For example, all medicines and medical equipment for Danish ships will be delivered with both English and Danish text.

Coaster traffic from Svendborg was being phased out in the mid 1990s, and that left its mark on the ship victualling business. However, a new demand emerged as we saw a growing demand for anchor chains. At the time, an anchor chain was a very expensive product, and not many companies stocked them.

Therefore, we went to China to find manufacturers and partners so that we could deliver anchors and anchor chains both faster and cheaper. We got a unique insight into the process of producing anchors and anchor chains, and this allowed us to build a business. To this day, we still trade with those same factories we visited in the mid 1990s. Over the years, we have gained great and valuable experience in importing from China.

SEACAT / Schmeding merge in 2007

A merge and a new warehouse in Hamburg!

In 2007, we joined forces with the well-known German supplier of anchors and anchor chains, Bernhard Schmeding GmbH. This means that we are now located in Svendborg, Denmark and Hamburg, Germany. Our new warehouse in Hamburg ensures we can offer a broad range of anchors, anchor chains and fittings.

As a supplier to the maritime industry, we have had many exciting, fun and odd experiences over the years. Challenges like sending a 12.5 tonne anchor by air – or when a ship lost its anchor off the coast of Rotterdam on a Friday night – were all resolved.
